FLYLAB
TUTORIAL
Virtual FlyLab (referred to here as FlyLab) is a result of a collaboration
between California State University,
the National Science Foundation,
and textbook publisher Addison
Wesley Longman. This application demonstrates
Gregor Mendel's principles of genetic inheritance. FlyLab utilizes the research
model Drosophila melanogaster- the common fruit fly.
Based on previous laboratory experience, FlyLab offers several advantages over the traditional culture of fruit flies
No supplies relating to the culture of flies are necessary (media, vials, flynap, etc...)
The results are immediately available- one does not have to wait 2-3 weeks for reproduction & growth
Not waking up every few hours to perform counts.
Flies are not forgotten at home or left behind at a friends, in the lab, at work, or in the car.
Car will not smell like Flynap!
However, FlyLab is not a substitute for "hands-on" laboratory work.
